Linseed Oil Stains

If the stain on your house turned dark just one year after staining, it's most likely due to linseed oil.

Linseed oil stains are designed to provide some degree of UV and water protection. But the linseed oil offers a suitable surface for mold and mildew to grow. Over a period of years, this can literally turn the siding on a home black. And not all siding is equally resistant to water/ mold damage.

Wood such as western red cedar is very mold and moisture resistant and can be restored fairly easily even after years of mold growth. Grooved paneling (plywood with a wood veneer) is very thin, so it's even color can be destroyed very quickly by water damage. In fact, just the process of removing mold and mildew from paneling can remove the color from the boards. So using a wood preservative is especially important for such siding. Redwood siding can also discolor quickly with linseed oil stain due to it's naturally dark tannins- causing it turn darker, faster than many other woods.

Wood preservatives are designed to limit the growth of mold and mildew. They are engineered just for this purpose- to limit UV damage and mold growth.

Installing gutters, proper drainage, or even stone wainscoting can help. But using the proper stain is critical for a beautiful and long-lasting coating.
